Chapter thirty-seven
Raife
âI canât reach Anton, I think heâs deserted us.â Trey was uncomfortable delivering the message, but did so anyway, his loyalty unquestionable.
âWhen was the last time you spoke with him?â
âOne week ago, we spoke briefly. Since then, weâd been occupied with the rescue mission and I did not reach out to him until two days ago. He did not return my call.â
I took a few steps away, absently rubbing my brow as I considered what this meant. Anton had always been a trustworthy associate of mine, always there if I needed a show of support and grateful for any favors I gave him. To think that heâd abandoned us, to side with our enemy, it was difficult to process.
âI will put in a call to him. If he has left us, he at least needs to show me the respect to tell me himself.â
Later that day, as the sun was setting, Anton did call and I knew immediately that he had indeed given up on our centuries-old alliance. After ending the call, I sat at my desk, a list running through my head of all the vampires I now needed to contact. Alliances with old friends needed to be strengthened and those who were not so friendly perhaps needed a reminder of exactly who they were dealing with. Everyone had secrets, and I knew them all and would use every last one to my advantage.
It was after two in the morning when Iâd finished my last call and I was satisfied with the results. All of my allies had been contacted, and swayed, cajoled or threatened to fall in lineâ¦and they did. At least now I didnât have to worry about more defections to the other side, although I still was not convinced that Darvon had been behind this rebellion. It was too complex, too well thought out and funded for him to be the ringleader. No, I knew it was someone else, but who?
I let myself into Dallasâ house through the backdoor and made my way silently up the stairs. I showered in the bathroom at the far end of the hall from Dallasâ bedroom so as not to wake him and Jules.
Extremely tired, I slid into bed behind Jules and wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her into my chest. She wiggled a bit and settled in, not waking, and I sighed, knowing the three of us were safe here, at least for the moment. Our bond beat steadily in my chest and I could feel my heart beating in time with hers before sleep overtook me.
I awoke to the feather light touch of a fingertip tracing my lips before skating down my chest and abdomen and sliding into my boxer briefs and taking my cock firmly in hand.
âMmm, good morning.â
âGood morning, Iâve missed you the past few days Raife.â
Her hand pumped slowly up and down my cock, firmly at the base before lightly palming the tip.
âI like your wake up, and Iâve missed you too.â
